A little 411 about our Goddess Lakshmi...
She is the GODDESS of WEALTH & PROSPERITY & when we say wealth & prosperity we are speaking of both material and spiritual SUCCESS. The word "Lakshmi" is a sanskrit word "Laksme" which means "Goal." With this meaning in mind Lakshmi represents the ideal goal in life, which includes worldly as well as spiritual prosperity. In Hindu Mythology Lakshmi is also known as Shri, she is the divine spouse of Lord Vishnu & she provides him WEALTH for the maintenance & preservation of all creation.
The FOUR arms of Lakshmi represent the four directions in space that symbolize omnipresence and omnipotence of the GODDESS. The idea behind her depiction is that the Goddess is always busy distributing wealth & prosperity to the devotees. The Lotus seat in which she stands upon signifies that while living in this world one should enjoy its wealth but NOT become obsessed with it.
Her FOUR hands represent the FOUR ends of human life..
- DHARMA - righteousness
- KAMA - genuine desires
- ARTHA - wealth
- MOKSHA - liberation from birth & death
The front of her hands represent the activity in the physical world and the back of her hands indicate all spiritual activities that lead to spiritual perfection..
(( although I believe there is no such thing as perfection... only the act of pursing perfection is perfect - the constant seeking of this state is in fact in itself... PERFECTION.. but this is only my opinion of a belief that I state here lol)))
The Right Sight of the body symbolizes activity a lotus in the back right hand conveys the idea that one must perform all duties in the world in accordance with DHARMA (righteousness) - - AMEN (faery add in on this from me) .. When this is done it leads to MOKSHA (liberation) which is also symbolized by a lotus in the back LEFT hand of Lakshmi.
The two ELEPHANTS depicted with Lakshmi convey a deeper meaning as to the state of mind in which we should remain in while seeking our own prosperity. The elephants symbolize the name and fame associated with worldly wealth & the idea is that any devotee should not earn wealth merely to acquire name and fame or only to satisfy his own material desires, but should SHARE it with others in order to bring HAPPINESS to others in addition to oneself.
The GODDESS of WEALTH, good FORTUNE, POWER & BEAUTY visits you and asks that you BELIEVE and SHARE in ALL of your WEALTH & BLESSINGS...
cycle of Life..
the gift of giving...
Namaste
