four of Cups ~ discontentment

When the four of cups appears it represents discontent, dissatisfaction, & boredom. The solid nature of the four and the unpredictability of our emotions make for an uncomfortable mix. This is the card of divine discontent & describes a situation in which, for various reasons, there is an inability to appreciate what we have. The man shown here looking too apathetic to accept the opportunity that is being offered to him, in the form of the fourth cup. Alternatively, four cups overflowing with good things may be depicted, but our inherent dissatisfaction with life prevents us from appreciating.  Taking responsibility for the status quo will bring abbot change. The man refusing the cups being handed to him is too jaded to appreciate what he is being offered. The four of cups depicts a state of boredom or apathy in which we are too preoccupied to appreciate the good things that surround us. Opportunities are there for the taking, but our inertia prevents us from seeing them. We may feel as if we are stuck in a rut but unable to muster the energy to break free. This card does not necessarily mean that our circumstances warrant such dissatisfaction. We may have everything we need, but somehow take our good fortune for granted. We are in danger of getting into a negative emotional pattern in which we fail to recognize the qualities of those around us NOW! The grass may appear greener on the other side, or we may long for something or someone that is unavailable. 

When this card appears it is asking for you to adopt a fresh approach to life and to reevaluate your position. You have become disenchanted with the status quo, in spite of the fact that you have a lot to be GRATEFUL for.. Life has become dull and you feel the need to introduce some variety. You may be feeling below par or out of sorts, particularly where your relationships are concerned. You may even begin to feel resentful, unloved, or be nursing a grudge. This period may seem like an anticlimax after an emotional high point. The message of the four of cups is that there is a chance for EMOTIONAL GROWTH, but YoU need to be willing to MOVE FORWARD & NoT remain entrenched in an OUTWORN pattern of thinking.
